ADAFP President Dr. Mmusi Maimane Attends the Inauguration of President Hakainde Hichilema for a Second Term and Discusses the Current Situation in Zambia.

Dr. Mmusi Maimane, Leader of Build One South Africa (BOSA) and President of the African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress (ADAFP), visited Zambia on 1–2 September 2026, where he attended the inauguration ceremony of His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema of the Republic of Zambia for his second term in office. The visit took place following an official invitation from the Zambian authorities.
During his visit, Dr. Maimane conveyed ADAFP’s congratulations to His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema on his inauguration and formally introduced the African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress. He outlined the Alliance’s mandate, objectives, and commitment to promoting democratic governance, political freedom, pluralism, and sustainable progress across Africa.
Dr. Maimane also held a number of meetings and media engagements during his visit, during which he expressed concern about developments affecting political opposition and the broader democratic space in Zambia. These interventions reflect ADAFP’s commitment to political pluralism, democratic rights, the rule of law, and the legitimate participation of opposition political forces in African public life.
Dr. Maimane is expected to undertake a further visit to Zambia next month. During that visit, he will provide the United Party for National Development (UPND) and President Hichilema with an update on ADAFP’s work and continue consultations with relevant political and institutional stakeholders.
The President and the Executive Committee of ADAFP categorically condemn political intimidation and calls for the immediate release of opposition leaders who are being detained without due process, or, where charges have been brought, for their cases to be handled through fair and transparent judicial proceedings. ADAFP also calls for independent investigations into allegations of political intimidation and violations of democratic rights.
ADAFP will continue to closely monitor developments in Zambia and to engage constructively with the ruling party and the Government of Zambia, as well as with other political and institutional stakeholders, in support of democratic governance, political pluralism, respect for fundamental rights, and inclusive political participation.
