ADAFP Commits to Advancing Accountable Democratic Governance and Launches Strategic Programs in Johannesburg’s Strategic Partnership Meeting

 

The African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress (ADAFP) concluded a high-level strategic engagement in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 6-7 May 2026, bringing together its leadership and key partners to advance the mission, refine the strategic direction, and strengthen coordinated action of the Alliance.

The meeting was convened with the primary goal of deepening partnerships, aligning priorities, and developing practical mechanisms to support democratic actors across the continent. It also sought to enhance institutional collaboration, mobilize resources, and translate shared values into actionable programs that advance accountable governance, electoral integrity, and inclusive political participation.

ADAFP was formally constituted in its Founding Meeting in February 2026 in the Kingdom of Morocco. Since its establishment, the Alliance has grown to include 45 members across 25 African countries, supported by a functioning Executive Committee, Board of Trustees, and General Assembly of Members. It is united by a shared commitment to strengthening liberal, democratic, and progressive forces across the continent.

At its core, ADAFP is anchored in a clear and urgent recognition: the challenges confronting African democracies are interconnected, increasingly transnational, and require coordinated, principled, and sustained collective action. The Alliance is therefore committed to advancing accountable democratic governance built on strong institutions and grounded in a shared vision for inclusive and sustainable development.

ADAFP seeks to advance a pragmatic “Third Way” for African governance one that harmonizes individual liberty and innovation with social justice and equity. In a global context often framed by false choices, the Alliance affirms that Africa’s progress depends on pursuing both liberty and justice simultaneously.

The election of Dr. Mmusi Maimane as the inaugural President of ADAFP underscores the Alliance’s commitment to credible, ethical, and reform-oriented leadership. Under his stewardship, the Alliance is mobilizing democratic actors across the continent to deliver tangible outcomes, strengthen institutions, and reinforce public trust in democratic governance.

Africa’s history has too often been shaped by external interests and internal governance failures that have constrained its immense potential. The persistence of authoritarianism, economic exclusion, and institutional fragility calls for a renewed democratic path one defined not by external alignments, but by African-led solutions rooted in freedom, inclusion, innovation, and accountability.

Across the continent, democratic challenges increasingly transcend borders. Electoral interference, democratic backsliding, economic instability, and institutional weakness in one country can have far-reaching regional implications. Addressing these dynamics requires a coordinated response among reformers committed to safeguarding democratic gains and advancing governance reforms.

In this regard, ADAFP positions itself as both a platform for structured dialogue and a vehicle for coordinated action. The Alliance recognizes that dialogue without implementation is insufficient, while isolated action without collaboration is unsustainable. Its purpose is to translate shared values into joint strategies and measurable impact.

While Africa is rich in ideas and reform-minded leadership, progress has often been constrained by fragmented efforts. ADAFP aims to bridge this gap by building durable partnerships, sharing practical tools, and mobilizing collective action capable of delivering meaningful and sustained democratic outcomes.

To operationalize its vision, ADAFP is launching the following flagship initiatives:

1. The ADAFP Endowment Fund, designed to strengthen institutional sustainability through self-financing and strategic investments;

2. The ADAFP Youth Leadership Academy, to be launched in Liberia in June 2026, focused on developing the next generation of democratic and liberal leaders;

3. The ADAFP Think Tank, launched today and headquartered in South Africa, to support research, policy development, and thought leadership;

4. The ADAFP Election Support Force, aimed at providing technical and strategic assistance to member parties during electoral processes.

The two-day Strategic Partnership Meeting held in South Africa, which convened members of the Executive Committee alongside key strategic partners, marks an important milestone in strengthening collaboration and collective action. The Alliance expresses its sincere appreciation to the President and the Coordinator for their leadership and for successfully hosting a productive and forward-looking engagement.
