ADAFP Statement on His Excellency Macky Sall’s Withdrawal from the Race for the Position of United Nations Secretary-General
The African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress (ADAFP) has taken note of the decision by His Excellency Macky Sall, former President of the Republic of Senegal, to withdraw his candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The ADAFP commends this act of statesmanship. By withdrawing following the Security Council’s straw poll and after consulting African leaders, President Sall has placed the interests of the Organisation and the pursuit of consensus above any personal ambition. This decision, taken with dignity, does him honour and brings honour to Africa.
The ADAFP supported his candidacy with conviction. Twelve years at the helm of Senegal, his presidency of the African Union, his efforts to secure Africa’s place in the G20, and his commitment to a fairer international financial system: few leaders have done as much to ensure that the continent’s voice is heard in global forums. He possessed the experience, stature, and vision required for the position.
His withdrawal does not bring an end to the debate he championed. Africa must have greater influence in global governance, and the United Nations needs profound reform to enhance its effectiveness and legitimacy. The ADAFP fully shares this conviction and will continue to advocate for it.
The ADAFP expresses its profound gratitude to President Macky Sall and reaffirms its enduring friendship with him. Peace, development, and international cooperation will continue to benefit from his commitment and his voice.
