ADAFP Statement on the Meeting Between Hon. Mmusi Maimane and Hon. Venâncio Mondlane
The African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress (ADAFP) is pleased to announce the successful meeting held on 28 July 2026 between Hon. Mmusi Maimane, President of ADAFP, and Hon. Venâncio Mondlane, President of the Aliança Nacional para um Moçambique Livre e Autónomo (ANAMOLA), with the participation of Mr. Stevens Mokgalapa, Assistant Coordinator of ADAFP.
The meeting provided an important platform to discuss the rapidly deteriorating political, human rights, and security situation in Mozambique, particularly the increasing challenges faced by ANAMOLA members and leaders, who have reportedly been subjected to intimidation, arbitrary arrests, political persecution, violence, and targeted killings.
During the discussions, ANAMOLA reported that 56 senior officials of the party have been killed over the past year, including a senior mobilization officer who was killed during the past month. The party also informed that it has submitted formal communications to the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) regarding these developments, but no effective action has yet been taken by these institutions.
ANAMOLA has been excluded from the national dialogue process, despite being a significant democratic political force in the country. The meeting expressed deep concern over the legal proceedings against its President, Hon. Venâncio Mondlane currently faces five criminal charges, including allegations related to incitement to terrorism, offences against the security of the State, and incitement to violence.
Hon. Maimane expressed ADAFP's full support and solidarity with ANAMOLA and reaffirmed the Alliance's unwavering commitment to defending democracy, human rights, political pluralism, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law throughout Africa. He emphasized that political competition must never be met with violence, intimidation, or the misuse of state institutions.
The two leaders agreed on the importance of increasing regional and international awareness of the situation in Mozambique. They decided that ADAFP and ANAMOLA will prepare and issue a joint report outlining the current challenges facing democratic forces in Mozambique and calling for the protection of political actors, respect for human rights, and the preservation of democratic civic space. ADAFP will continue to monitor developments in Mozambique closely. Further actions and initiatives by the Alliance will be considered and decided upon by the ADAFP Executive Committee at its forthcoming meeting.
During the meeting, President of ADAFP welcomed ANAMOLA's decision to apply for full membership of the Alliance. He confirmed the ADAFP Executive Committee approval of ANAMOLA's admission as a full member of ADAFP, thereby strengthening the Alliance's democratic representation in the Southern African region.
In recognition of ANAMOLA's important role and extensive regional experience, Hon. Maimane invited Hon. Venâncio Mondlane to coordinate ADAFP's engagement in the Lusophone African countries, with the objective of expanding cooperation among democratic forces, strengthening regional networks, and promoting the values of freedom, accountability, constitutional governance, and good governance.
ADAFP remains committed to working with its member parties and democratic partners across Africa to advance peaceful democratic development, safeguard political freedoms, uphold the rule of law, and build a continent founded on liberty, justice, and prosperity.
