Statement by ADAFP on the Escalation of Conflict in the Middle East and the War Involving Iran

Statement by ADAFP on the Escalation of Conflict in the Middle East and the War Involving Iran

The African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress (ADAFP) expresses its deep concern regarding the recent escalation of military confrontation in the Middle East and the widening hostilities involving the Islamic Republic of Iran. These developments threaten regional and international stability and undermine prospects for the peaceful resolution of disputes.
ADAFP firmly reiterates its commitment to the principles of international law, the United Nations Charter, and the peaceful settlement of conflicts. We condemn unilateral military actions carried out without authorization from the United Nations Security Council, which weaken the international legal order and derail diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and preventing war. At the same time, we condemn Iran’s military attacks against neighbouring Arab countries and other states, including Azerbaijan and Cyprus. Such actions violate sovereignty, fuel escalation, and risk dragging the region into a broader and more destructive conflict.
ADAFP wishes to clearly distinguish between the Iranian regime and the Iranian people. We express our solidarity with the people of Iran, who have repeatedly demonstrated their aspirations for freedom, peace, human rights, and democratic governance. The Iranian population must not be the victim of war, sanctions, repression, or geopolitical confrontation. We reaffirm our support for their legitimate right to pursue democratic transformation and to build institutions that respect the rule of law, pluralism, and civil liberties. Democratic forces in Iran deserve international support and protection as they struggle for a peaceful and democratic future.
The pursuit of peace is incompatible with unilateral or illegal military actions, which undermine the rule of law and long-term stability. Distinguishing between a regime and its people is essential to uphold human rights, avoid collective punishment, and maintain legitimacy in international discourse. Recognizing the dignity of all people, including those living under authoritarian governance, strengthens universal norms and fosters constructive international engagement.
Peace, stability, and democracy in the Middle East cannot be achieved through war or unilateral military action. They require dialogue, adherence to international law, civilian protection, and the empowerment of people seeking freedom and democratic governance.
ADAFP urges all responsible actors in the international community to act decisively to stop the war, uphold the rule of law, and reopen the path toward a just and lasting peace.
ADAFP calls for:
* An immediate ceasefire and the cessation of all military operations by all parties involved.
* The urgent return to diplomatic negotiations under international supervision.
* Full respect for international law and the sovereignty of all states in the region.
* International efforts to prevent further escalation and regional destabilization.
* Support for the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people and engagement with democratic forces committed to peaceful political transformation.
