ADAFP COMMENDS GLOBAL DEMOCRATIC RESILIENCE ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF DEMOCRACY

Yaoundé, September 15th, 2024


On this International Day of Democracy, the African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress (ADAFP) joins the global community in celebrating the fundamental principles of self-determination, freedom, and the universal right of all peoples to determine their own political, economic, social, and cultural systems.

This year, as we reflect on the theme of strengthening democratic institutions, ADAFP reaffirms its commitment to advocating for free, fair, and credible electoral processes across the continent. We acknowledge the hand-raised-in-salute gesture, a powerful symbol of citizen participation and peaceful dissent that remains a cornerstone of any thriving democracy.

ADAFP’s specific initiatives in this changing landscape focus on safeguarding democratic quality and ensuring the protection of peaceful dissent. By actively empowering citizens across the continent, the alliance ensures that their voices are heard and that democratic values serve as a foundation for sustainable development and unity throughout Africa.

Despite ongoing challenges in the continent , including threats to institutional stability, civil wars and armed conflicts, economic pressures, and barriers to free trade—ADAFP members remains dedicated to maintaining peace, fostering regional connectivity, and encouraging institutional development . We stand firm in our commitment to overcoming these obstacles to secure freedom, democratic transition, and economic prosperity.

Through regional cooperation, ADAFP continues to support democratic principles in Africa. We actively engage with our members and partners and democratic governments to strengthen  public institutions, empower citizens, and resolve political conflicts through structured dialogue and reconciliation.
