Letter of Condolence and Solidarity Following the Earthquake in Colombia
His Excellency Abelardo de la Espriella
President of the Republic of Colombia
His Excellency Omar Bula Escobar
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Colombia
Excellencies,
On behalf of the African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress (ADAFP), I wish to convey our deepest condolences and solidarity to the Government and people of Colombia following the devastating earthquake that struck the country on 10 August 2026.
The powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake, centred in western Colombia and felt across a wide area including Bogotá, has caused tragic loss of life, injuries, and extensive destruction. Our hearts and thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones and with all the communities affected by this terrible disaster.
Colombia is also home to our beloved colleague and friend, Mr. Walter Torres Hernández, Adviser to ADAFP on African Union–European Union and African Union–Latin America relations. His connection with our Alliance makes this tragedy particularly close to our hearts.
At this difficult moment, the ADAFP stands in solidarity with the Colombian people and with all those working tirelessly in rescue, relief, and recovery efforts. We pray for the victims, for the missing and injured, and for strength and comfort for their families.
May those who have lost their lives rest in peace, and may Colombia find strength and unity as it confronts this tragedy and begins the long process of recovery and reconstruction.
Please accept, Excellencies, the assurances of our highest consideration and our heartfelt solidarity with the people of Colombia.
Hon. Mmusi Maimane
President
African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress (ADAFP)
