ADAFP Calls for Respect of Constitutional Order and Term Limits in Zimbabwe

Press Statement, March 23, 2026

The African Democratic Alliance for Freedom and Progress (ADAFP) is following the recent events in Zimbabwe, that may threaten constitutional integrity, democratic systems, and political stability.

ADAFP is deeply concerned by the efforts to initiate a constitutional referendum aimed at extending presidential tenure beyond the constitutional limits. Such actions risk undermining democratic principles, eroding public trust, and potentially destabilizing the country.

Across Africa, attempts to alter constitutional term limits have often contributed to political tensions, instability, and, in some cases, unconstitutional changes of government. It is therefore imperative that Zimbabwe safeguards its democratic gains by adhering to constitutional norms and promoting inclusive, credible, and competitive electoral processes in line with regional and international standards.

ADAFP calls on the President of Zimbabwe, Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa, and the leadership of the ruling ZANU-PF to uphold the integrity of the Constitution, including the established two-term limit, which remains a cornerstone of democratic governance and peaceful political transition in Zimbabwe.

In addition, ADAFP urges the Government of Zimbabwe to respect fundamental human rights and civil liberties. ADAFP calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Tendai Biti and all individuals detained for peacefully expressing their fundamental rights. The right to freedom of expression, association, and political participation is guaranteed under international human rights frameworks and remains essential to the functioning of any democratic society.

ADAFP further calls on the African Union to engage constructively in support of constitutional governance and to uphold its principles on democracy, rule of law, and respect for term limits across the continent.

ADAFP reaffirms its commitment to democratic values and strongly encourages all stakeholders in Zimbabwe to promote dialogue, respect constitutional order, and ensure that governance processes reflect the will of the people.
