Information
The Mouvement Républicain (MR) is an opposition political movement in the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) that has faced significant restrictions from local authorities, including the denial of permits for rallies and threats of arrest against its members in 2023. It has campaigned for the release of political prisoners.
The MR operates as an opposition entity, often facing suppression in a political landscape dominated by the ruling Congolese Labour Party (PCT).
In March 2023, the Brazzaville prefect denied the MR permission to hold a peaceful rally for deceased former presidential candidate Guy Brice Parfait Kolélas, citing that MR was not an officially recognized political party, despite leaders presenting proof of their legal status. Authorities threatened to arrest members of the Mouvement Républicain, claiming their meetings would "damage the social fabric and endanger public peace".
The movement has been involved in campaigns for the release of political prisoners, including collecting signatures for petitions, as seen in late 2022.
