About the Leader
Moïse Katumbi Chapwe is a Congolese businessman, politician, and sports executive. He is the president of the political party Ensemble pour la République and one of the most influential opposition figures in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Katumbi served as Governor of Katanga Province from 2007 to 2015, a period marked by major economic growth, mining-sector reforms, infrastructure development, and large social investments. Before entering national politics, he built a successful business career in fishing, mining services, transport, and agribusiness.
Since 1997, he has been president of the TP Mazembe, one of Africa’s most successful football clubs, winner of multiple CAF Champions League titles and finalist of the FIFA Club World Cup in 2010.
Once a key ally of President Joseph Kabila, Katumbi broke with the ruling party in 2015, denouncing constitutional violations and democratic backsliding. He became a central figure of the opposition platforms G7, Le Rassemblement, and Alternance pour la République, and was repeatedly nominated as a joint opposition presidential candidate.
Forced into exile between 2016 and 2019 due to politically motivated prosecutions later annulled, he returned to the DRC in May 2019. In the 2023 presidential election, Katumbi finished second with 18%, confirming his status as one of the country’s leading political figures.

Information
Ensemble pour la République is a Congolese political party founded in December 2019 by Moïse Katumbi Chapwe. It emerged from the opposition platform Ensemble pour le Changement and has since become one of the principal opposition forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The party presents itself as reformist and democratic, committed to the rule of law,
supportive of economic modernization and decentralization, focused on anti-corruption and institutional strengthening. The Ensemble promotes political alternation through elections, constitutional governance, and peaceful democratic competition.
After the 2018 general elections, the party secured a significant parliamentary presence and initially joined the ruling coalition known as the Union sacrée. However, political tensions—especially ahead of the 2023 presidential race—led the party to reposition itself clearly within the opposition.
In the 2023 presidential election, its leader Moïse Katumbi ran as the party’s candidate and finished second nationally, consolidating Ensemble pour la République as a major political actor.
The party emphasizes national unity, economic development based on private-sector growth, security and state authority and transparent electoral processes.
Today, Ensemble pour la République stands as one of the most structured and nationally visible opposition parties in the DRC, combining business-oriented leadership with strong regional roots in Katanga and growing influence across the country.
