About the Leader
Mmusi Maimane is a prominent South African politician, activist, and party leader. He is best known for serving as the first Black leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) from 2015 to 2019, and for founding Build One South Africa (BOSA) in 2022.
Born on 6 June 1980 in Soweto, Maimane emerged from a generation shaped by the democratic transition in South Africa. He holds multiple university degrees in psychology, theology, and public administration.
In 2015 he was elected leader of the Democratic Alliance—the first Black South African to head the party. In 2019 he resigned from the DA after internal disagreements on race, policy direction, and party identity.
In 2022 he founded Build One South Africa (BOSA), a movement focused on economic opportunity, anti-corruption, education reform, and leadership renewal.
Maimane is known for advocating accountable and ethical governance, economic reforms benefiting youth and small businesses, strong democratic institutions,
non-racialism and social cohesion.
As leader of Build One South Africa, he positions himself as an alternative to both the ruling ANC and traditional opposition parties. Maimane remains an influential public voice in debates on governance, democracy, and socio-economic inequality.
